Although we had been to Italy several times, we had never visited the area south of RomeLazio. We were expecting the coastline to be beautiful, but were totally taken by surprise when we saw the mountain ranges that form the hinterland in this region. As we travelled along the SS7, the Via Appia, we wound our way among the foothills, and were able to glimpse the higher mass of the mountains beyond.

Tre Cancelle was much more than we could have hoped for: a lovely apartment and a warm welcome from Paul and Louise, our very considerate hosts, for whom nothing was too much trouble!

The area around Itri is full of such unexpected delights. The town itself is lively and bustling, has all the practical shops one might need, and boasts a dramatic castle perched on a rocky cliff. We loved the road that leads from Itri towards the coastal resort of Sperlonga, and the views that you are rewarded with as you reach this little town. In Autumn, Sperlonga was sleepy, but still bathed in sunshine and boasting a long, unspoilt, sandy beach that enticed us into its warm waters. We returned many times, and often had the beach almost to ourselves.

Being located halfway between Rome and Naples, staying at Tre Cancelle allowed us to visit both, and to enjoy some the many historical treasures they have to offer. Herculaneum was amazing, and I had to be dragged away! Rome was awesome; the Colosseum and the Forum immersed us in its past, and we’ll just have to return to see more.

Nearer to ‘home’, we enjoyed discovering Cassino with its panoramic views and wartime connections, eating freshly-cooked fish at the harbourside in Terracina, and taking an evening stroll around the port of Gaeta.

Thank you, Tre Cancelle, for a memorable holiday and an introduction to a beautiful part of Italy!

Well, our stay in Tre Cancelle was the most extraordinary and pleasurable experience we ever had on any holiday. The apartment was so comfortable and you supplied all we could possibly need and much, much more too!  I can not exaggerate any of the pleasures and abundant hospitality that was showered on both of us from the moment we arrived in your home. You both made our holiday an unforgettable experience. We still talk of the fresh figs Maria picked from the tree for breakfast and the peace, silence and spectacular view from the balcony in the evenings, looking down on the sun setting over the sea and the lights of Sperlonga twinkling in the distance.

The coastline is well worth touring, there are lots of good towns to visit and all along the coast there is an abundance of good beaches. The scenery along the coast and inland too, is spectacular. We found the beach in Sperlonga very nice with clean, clear water and plenty of facilities. Sperlonga is a nice town and the quaint streets in old part are a delight to explore. We went to Monte Cassino, well worth visiting. rive to Tre Cancelle from Rome was easy; thanks to Paul’s excellent, clear directions.

I can recommend this lovely spot for a holiday whatever time of year.  It is unspoiled, very authentic with fabulous hosts and great character. I’ve been 3 times and every time have found something different to do ! Scuba diving next time ! Paul and Louie will look after you and are full of information about the local towns and region.  Fab beaches too, especially out of season.  Check it out!

Paul and Louise have created a welcoming and charming farmhouse with self-catering apartments on two floors, both of which command views over vines and olive groves in the rolling hills behind Sperlonga. They go out of their way to make ones stay interesting and memorable and are a mine of useful information about key places to visit in the surrounding countryside.
